Classroom Corner- Week of Tuesday, Sept. 30th

6th Grade

Religion - This week, we are talking about the value of loyal friendships.  We are also reading about two Josephs- the New Testament Joseph (Jesus's Earth father) and the Old Testament Joseph.  Ask your student about his crazy story!  He faced so many challenges, and still showed fidelity towards God!  This week- essay due Friday and test on Friday (Chapter 4).

LOOKING AHEAD - Unit Test next week after Camp Christopher- Unit Review will be due on Friday, Oct. 10, the day we take the test.

Social Studies - We are starting Chapter 2.  Today, we started reading about the Fertile Crescent.  We will also learn all about Mesopotamia.  Ask your student what "Mesopotamia" means and 2 reasons why this was a good place to live.

Health - We are working so hard on our physical fitness!  Friday, we beat the 5th grade in a kickball game 15-5!  We encouraged one another and worked together as a team, all while working on getting our 60 minutes of activity each day!  The students should be keeping a fitness log of their physical activity for the next 6 days (Friday - Thursday).  Today, we completed a T25 video- the kids did awesome!  Tomorrow we will do some running activities outside (weather permitting).

Reading - The students will be presenting their book projects in a can this week.  They will also be assigned their new book projects for October- a tombstone project!  They need to choose a biography to read, and the biography has to be on someone who has passed away.  They also have reading homework due on Thursday that goes with their novel.  So far, the presentations have been awesome!

REMINDERS- School pictures and pet blessing this Friday.  DRESS UP FOR PICTURES- NO SWEATS, WORKOUT PANTS, LEGGINGS (without a dress), or JEANS!!!!  Pet Blessing is at 2:45 out back.  Camp Christopher next Monday-Tuesday.  Be here by 7:30 to pack the bus!!!  Bike-a-Thon next Friday (10/10).


5th Grade

Classroom Corner- Week of Sept. 22nd

6th Grade

Religion - This week, we are reading one of my favorite Bible stories- the story of how Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of stew!  We will also discuss God's covenant with Noah, and how Catholics can make commitments to our faith.  The students have an essay due on Friday along with their normal test and Chapter Review (Chapter 3).

Social Studies - This week, we are playing Jeopardy and then taking our chapter test.  The test is over Chapter 1 and is on Wednesday.  Make sure your student studies!

Health - We are taking our test on sun safety today (Monday).  Then, we will start a unit on healthy living including physical fitness and nutrition.

Language Arts - This week, we will be working on practicing our capitalization rules and other grammar work through our DOL activities. 

Reading - We are continuing to read Paint by Magic.  The story is getting creepier by the minute as Connor is swept away to the 1920's.  Ask your student to fill you in!

Classroom Corner Week of Sept. 15th

6th Grade

Religion- This week, we will be talking about the Eucharistic sacrifice.  Please make sure your students studies their 5 religion spelling words for the quiz on Friday.

Social Studies- We are wrapping up Chapter 1 by studying parallel time lines and Lesson 3 about developing cultures.  The students will have a vocab and chapter review due on Monday to prepare for Jeopardy and a test next week.

Health- The students will play Jeopardy to review for their test over SUN SAFETY next week.  Also, we will have a visitor on Thursday who will talk to us about the harmful effects of cataracts, which can be caused from the sun.  Students should be studying their notes Monday and Tuesday for Jeopardy- the winners earn 10 bonus points on their test!

Language Arts- The students have a sensory essay due on Wednesday.  On Wednesday, I will read the 5th graders' essays, and our class will have the chance to guess where the 5th graders visited based on sensory clues from the essay.  We will also review capitalization rules 1-5 including how to mark titles of books, poems, songs, etc.

Reading- We are continuing to read our novel Paint by Magic.  Ask your student what has happened so far in our story.  I also reminded the  class that September is half over, so they should be working towards finishing their book projects and AR goals! (due Sept. 30th - Tues.)

5th Grade

Camp Christopher date!

The fifth and sixth grade classes will be attending Camp Christopher in Bath, Ohio, from Monday, October 6th - Tuesday, October 7th.

We will leave school on Monday at 7:45A.M.  Students need to be here by 7:30 to load our gear ioto the bus so that we can leave promptly at 7:45.
We will return to school on Tuesday between 5:30 & 6:00P.M.

MORE INFORMATION TO COME AT A PARENT MEETING AT OPEN HOUSE!  ALL 5th and 6th GRADERS NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE PARENT ATTEND THE MEETING!!

Classroom Corner Week of September 8th

6th Grade

Religion- We are reading about Abraham and Sarah, and we will read the story of Mary and the angel Gabriel.  Test on Friday.

Social Studies- We are delving into Chapter 1- Digging up the Past.  We are reading about the first hunters and gatherers and early farmers.  Ask your student the difference between history and pre-history, and about the first people in America.

Reading- We are continuing to read and explore our novel, Paint by Magic.  We are learning a lot about our main character, Connor, and the bizarre things happening at his house.  Ask your student what is happening at Connor's house that is cause for alarm.

Language Arts- We are still working on our sensory essay about a place that we visited this summer.  We have our second week of spelling words.  This week, we will review capitalization rules from last year, especially how to mark titles in type and in handwriting.  Quiz your student!

Health- We are taking a much closer look at UV index.  Each student should be researching the UV index of Vermilion and another U.S. city of choice each day.  The students have 2 assignments due on Friday- the UV Index chart and an essay about how they protect themselves in the sun.  Jeopardy and test next week!

5th Grade

Reading- We are finishing our vocab circles for our novel, and then we will start reading our novel, Summer of the Swans

Language Arts- We have our second list of spelling words.  This week, we will take notes on the first 5 capitalization rules including titles.  We are also continuing to work on our sensory essay about a place that we visited this summer.

Classroom Corner, Week of Sept. 2nd

This week in our classroom-

6th Grade-->
Religion- We are studying the history and background of The Bible including how old it is, how many books there are, what languages it was written in first, and what the word bible means.  Also, we are learning about which books are in the Old and New Testament, and we are practicing looking up passages in The Bible.  Jeopardy on Thursday (worth 10 bonus points on the test) and test on Friday!  Study each night!  On Friday, we will also have our mass participation quiz, including the five religion spelling words the students were given today. 

This week's religion spelling words- Scripture, Hebrews, Testament, prophet & Gospels

Social Studies- This week, we are looking at ancient cave paintings and important people during pre-historic times.  We will also work on sequence reading in social studies, and we will complete a vocab preview for our first chapter.  (Chapter 1)  Hopefully, we will have the chance to create our own modern day cave paintings on Friday!

Language Arts- This week, we are working on getting back into the swing of DOL- Daily Oral Language.  We have also started spelling, and 3 sixth graders scored 100% on the pre-test, so they don't have spelling the rest of the week!  We will also work on writing a mystery descriptive essay on a place that we visited this summer, challenging our classmates to guess where we visited based on sensory clues.

Reading- We are starting our chapter book, Paint by Magic.  This week, we will complete a pre-write and vocab circles, and hopefully start actually reading the book!  It is a great time travel story!

5th Grade
